Day 3: Transfer from Sucre to Potosí by land, City Tour in Potosí
Today we travel to Potosí, a city located at an altitude of 4,000 meters. In the afternoon, enjoy a tour of the colonial city center and learn about the glorious past of this city. The history of Potosí is marked by the Cerro Rico de Potosí with its silver mines, which, in their heyday, made Potosí bigger than Paris or London (unbelievable, but true!). One of the most important and interesting attractions of the city is the “Casa de la Moneda” museum. Night in hotel in Potosí. (D/-/-).
Day 4: Visit to the Potosí mines and transfer from Potosí to Uyuni.
In the morning, you will be able to see the impressive but also terrifying conditions in the “Cerro Rico” silver mines being exploited for their precious metals since colonial times. After lunch, you will travel to Uyuni, arriving in the late afternoon. Overnight at hotel in Uyuni (B / – / -)
Day 5: Tour of the Salar de Uyuni to Tahua, a town located at the foot of the Tunupa volcano
After breakfast, we embark on a 4×4 car to explore the largest salt desert in the world with more than 12,000 km2 of pure salt. Bordering the Salar, we first pass through Colchani, a small community whose inhabitants work with salt. Further on you will come across a small family business and mounds of salt on the banks of the salt flat. And now we fully immerse ourselves in the endless desert of white salt, outlined on the northern horizon by the impressive Tunupa volcano. And it is exactly in the direction of Tunupa that we will continue our journey. We will go up (in the car) the slopes of the Tunupa volcano to visit the tomb and mummies of Coquesa. In this place, you will literally have the salt flat at your feet in its entirety. At noon we arrive at the salt hotel in Tahua. In the afternoon, the ruins of “Pucara Chillima” await you! Again, we will go by car to a certain point, from where the walk will take place for about 60 to 90 minutes to reach the ruins. We are in a hidden corner of the salt flat, a place of spectacular beauty. In just 30 minutes, we descend back to the car. If you are a more active person and in good physical condition, we can offer you a walk of approximately 2 to 2.5 hours located right on a pilgrimage path that the population used for spiritual ceremonies. This trail will take you directly to your hotel. The incomparable light conditions at this time of day, the panoramic view over the salt to the Tunupa volcano make this tour a completely special experience. Overnight at Tayka de Sal Hotel, Tahua (B/Bx/D).
Day 6: Cross the Salar from north to south and walk along the cluster of lagoons in the highlands to the Siloli Desert
Today we start a day full of unforgettable and unique experiences. We will cross the Salar de Uyuni from north to south with a visit to the spectacular “Incahuasi Island” right in the middle of the salt flat. A short walk will have you exploring the island, and you will be amazed by the giant cacti that are centuries old and grow up to 12 meters trying to reach the blue sky. From the lookout, a 360° panoramic view across the salt flat can be appreciated. On the southern shore of the Salar, we will visit the Cueva Galaxia, a cave full of extraordinary geological formations that testify to the drying process of “Lago Michin” (about 300,000 years ago) and “Lago Tauca” (approximately 40,000 years ago). We continue our trip to San Pedro de Quemes, where we will have our lunch at the Hotel Tayka de Piedra along with a short rest. In the afternoon, we will enjoy a simply magnificent landscape: passing through the Ollague Volcano, we will visit the colorful Cañapa, Hedionda, Chiarkota, Honda lagoons and finally the Ramaditas lagoon. On the shores of the lagoons you can admire the three typical species of flamingos of this region that feed in this inhospitable place between hard crusts of borax and sulfur. We leave behind the valley full of colored lagoons to immerse ourselves in the sand and stone expanses of the Siloli desert, an absolutely fantastic and surreal landscape tinted with all possible shades of terracotta and ocher. The 4×4 travels through the desert, and in the midst of this amazing panorama, our Tayka del Desierto hotel awaits us. Night in the Siloli desert (B / L / D).
Day 7: Visit to the Stone Tree, Laguna Colorada, Sol de Mañana geysers, Polques hot springs, Laguna Verde and return to Uyuni.
We start early in the morning, first to go to the “Stone Tree” a stone figure molded by wind erosion, and then to the “Sol de Mañana” geysers with their columns of steam and bubbling holes located at the highest point of our trip, 5,000 masl. But there is more: we now enter from the Salar de Chaviri, a symphony of white, red and blue colors, to our next stop at the Polques hot springs. Shortly after, the Valley of the Ladies of the Desert or the one called by tourists as “Salvador Dalí’s Desert” awaits us. The “ladies” are rock formations created by wind erosion, solitary and isolated in the desert, fully exposed to erosion. And if you now think that you cannot have a more beautiful view, here comes the pearl of the entire region: Laguna Verde, located at the foot of the majestic Licancabur volcano. We have reached the extreme south of Bolivia, and from here we begin our return, not before one last look at the phenomenal
Laguna Colorada, red due to the action of some algae and with flocks of flamingos. Now, you can feel comfortable in the car, as we expect quite a long drive. An hour before reaching Uyuni, we pass through the “new” town of San Cristóbal, because the “old” town was relocated to make way for one of the largest silver mines in Bolivia. In the evening, travel by public bus from Uyuni to La Paz. Night by bus (B / BxL / -).
*Optional: Flight Uyuni – La Paz with overnight in La Paz (additional price).
Día 8: Llegada a La Paz, City Tour en La Paz
In the morning we arrive in La Paz. The entrance to this metropolis of the Andes is spectacular, because it seems that just in front of you the ground disappears to open the view to a giant “pot” and an endless carpet of houses that climb the slopes of the hills that surround this city, all under the gaze of the majestic snow-capped mountain Illimani. Transfer from the bus station to your hotel located in a central area of the city. After lunch, we walk through the witches market, the San Francisco Cathedral, the main square ¨Murillo¨ and the famous ¨Jaén street¨ that testifies to the past of the city. Overnight in La Paz (- / – / -).
Day 9: Transfer from La Paz to Copacabana and crossing from Copacabana to Isla del Sol.
In private transport, we leave the city of La Paz towards Copacabana, located right on the shore of Lake Titicaca. On the north side, you will see the glaciers of the Cordillera Real (6,000 meters). We will arrive at the Strait of Tiquina, where you will cross in a small motor boat the strait between the smaller lake called
¨Wiñaymarka¨ and the main lake ¨Chucuito¨. We continue our journey and on both sides of the road you will see the terraces on the slopes of the hills that testify to pre-Columbian cultures, for example the Chiripa culture, which practices this type of agriculture in the region. We will arrive at the town of Copacabana at noon. What awaits you is a fascinating tour of Lake Titicaca to reach the Isla del Sol. From here, a small path leads, with some effort, uphill to today’s destination: the small and idyllic hotel on top of Isla del Sol with spectacular panoramic views over the lake. Overnight on Isla del Sol (B / – / D).
Day 10: Hike from south to north of Isla del Sol. Transfer to Copacabana and return to La Paz.
If you are in good physical condition, you can make the journey on foot. Along the way, you will come across the Chincana temple. The trail goes up and down, but you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Cordillera Real with its snow-capped peaks and glaciers at more than 6,000 meters above sea level. and the blue landscape of Lake Titicaca. Once you arrive at the Chincana temple you will have time to observe and enjoy the view, while we have a small box lunch (snack). In about 40 minutes of walking, we descend to the small town of Challapampa, where white sand beaches and a small archaeological museum await us. We visit the museum and then prepare for the return to Copacabana. After a short walk through the town of Copacabana, the sanctuary of the Virgin of Copacabana, the craft fair and the farmers market. Finally we embark to return to the city of La Paz. Overnight in La Paz (B / Bx / -).
Day 11: Transfer to La Paz airport and flight back to destination.
